Why was Tarannum Khan famous?

The name Tarannum became headlines when the authorities booked her for not paying income tax regularly sometime in September 2005. A few years earlier, her name became the talk of the town. A then little-known criminal, Abdul Karim Telgi, is said to have showered her with ₹90 Lakh at Deepa Bar. Both names in that sentence are synonymous with the Mumbai and Indian crime scene.

The Tarannum-Telgi connect

Telgi was a convicted criminal and an Indian counterfeiter. Deepa Bar was notorious for being a hub for several criminals, both past and present. This could be the exact scene that goes towards the climax of Scam 2003, the series about the Telgi story. You can now watch Scam 2003 and other intriguing web series with an OTTPlay Subscription.

In that series, it is suggested that Telgi was already at his wits’ end with all his ‘hustle’.  However, this incident was the one that broke the camel’s back, bringing about, or at least speeding up, his downfall.

Why Tarannum Khan, the Bar Dancer, Is An Enigma

Tarannum became popular in the underworld of Mumbai. People who had seen her said that she was one of the most beautiful bar dancers at Deepa Bar.  Some also said that she had a striking resemblance to Madhuri Dixit.

Not many people have actually seen her, apart from the patrons of Deepa Bar over the years. Another interesting aspect of all this is that back then, the internet was young. Some people shared the actress Tamannah Bhatia’s photos as Tarannum, the bar dancer.

Bhatia was not a household name at the time. So this was an easy rumour to spread on the Internet. Due to this, the term ‘Tarannum Khan actress’ became famous in Mumbai. Once she became infamous, Tarannum only appeared in a burqa, making her an enigma to the general, middle-class population of Mumbai.

Tarannum has her own story to tell. She maintains that she and her family lived in Andheri, and her father worked in a small shop to make ends meet. They lost the shop in the riots, and her father had a heart attack, which led Tarannum to look for employment. After doing some menial jobs, Tarannum took up dancing in bars, and the rest, as they say, is Mumbai crime history.

Of course, this is one of the most curious Mumbai crime incidents and something that would have happened only in the past. With everyone having a mobile phone now, Tarannum Khan would have become a meme within the blink of an eye if she were active today.

Somewhere, it is unfortunate that a woman like Tarannum finds her name on a site that covers serial killers and criminals and names that are synonymous with Mumbai crime.
