The Stoneman Murders: India’s Jack The Ripper

The Stoneman murders rocked Mumbai and Calcutta, and the crimes were never solved. Jack the Ripper is one of the most infamous serial killers in the world. Part of his infamy exists because the authorities could never find out who the killer was. Another part of it existed because of the victims, prostitutes. Of course, the media had a field day with this, and obviously, there are several movies and books made on the concept. Jack the Ripper was active in the late 1880s.

And surprisingly, two centuries later, a similar kind of killing spree happened in the late 1900s in India. Neither of the culprits was ever caught, and what remained is the lexicon that they created. In the case of the Indian murders, the media branded it the Stone Man murders.

About the Stoneman Murders

The murders first started in Mumbai, when homeless men and women were killed in a familiar pattern – stones weighing as much as 30 kg crushing their faces. There seemed to be no motive, and it was challenging to find out who these homeless people were – they mostly lived alone and didn’t particularly hold a job. After a lull, the murders of the pattern continued in Calcutta and stopped as abruptly as they had begun.

How Stoneman is similar to Jack the Ripper

The Stoneman murders were never solved, and they started abruptly, just like the Ripper spree. While Jack the Ripper targeted prostitutes, the murderer targeted street dwellers. Both types of individuals would have little support, either from the general public or the authorities. There is, of course, another similarity – both inspired the film industry.

Media inspired by the Stoneman murders

The Stoneman murders have inspired one movie and a TV series. The movie, The Stoneman Murders, was released in 2009 and starred Arbaaz Khan and Kay Kay Menon in pivotal roles.  The series also inspired a Bengali TV series.

You can watch the Stone Man murders on Amazon Prime, MX Player, and Jio Hotstar, as well as with an OTT Play subscription. In the movie, the deaths are attributed to a member of the police force, who comes from a particular tribe.

In reality, though, the crimes were never solved.  They garnered enough interest, but it quickly waned with the crimes being unsolved and the murders stopping as abruptly as they began.

While some bloggers and podcasters consider Raman Raghav to be India’s version of Jack the Ripper, he’s not. Jack the Ripper was never caught, and Raghav was. In hindsight, it is the Stoneman Murderer who could be India’s answer to Jack the Ripper.
