Bengaluru Cab Driver Robbed Of Car In New Scam

Bengaluru crime has a new type of scam to add. A cab driver has lodged a complaint after a woman pretending to be a future client robbed him of his car.

The woman first met the man, who drives a cab in Karwar, and told him that she wanted to book his services for a trip from Bengaluru to Mysuru. They exchanged numbers. A few days later, the woman contacted him and instructed him to book a room in a hotel. She provided him with her Aadhaar card.

On arrival, the woman said that she wanted to go to a nearby beauty parlour and invited him to freshen up in the room’s washroom. He did so, and the woman locked him from the outside. According to this report, the man claims that the woman and her male accomplice then fled with his phone and vehicle.

This is a relatively new modus operandi that targets cab drivers, who are generally gig operators tied to aggregators. Currently, it is unclear whether the victim is associated with any cab aggregator or is a private cab driver.

Of course, a standard SOP of any cab aggregator wouldn’t allow the cab driver to personally contact the client. They wouldn’t allow him to book a hotel room in the name of the purported client as well.

This scam seems well-thought-out and well-orchestrated. The scammer even waited a few days to contact the victim. This scam is relatively new and has yet to be reported by any Mumbai cab driver. However, this is proof that gig drivers should remain vigilant about who they decide to interact with.
