Charkop Woman Robbed Of Jewellery And Mobile Using Decades Old Con

A decades old scam has returned to Mumbai crime, and a woman from Charkop was robbed of her jewelery and other valuables in broad daylight using it. The woman has claimed in her FIR that she had gone to an Airtel gallery to have her phone repaired.

While returning home, a man met her and told her that another man, who recently became a father, is giving free food to poor people.The woman followed the man, and when they were away, he said that the man is feeding only poor, and she should hide her jewelery and mobile phone.

The men then told her to keep her earrings, bangles and mobile phone in a yellow bag, and also told her to deposit her sandals. She did so, but going a while, she felt her feet burning, and therefore decided to wear the chappals, only to find her jewelry and mobile missing from the yellow bag.

This con is at least two decades old, and surprisingly, even the earliest reports of such a scam came from the Mumbai suburb areas, like Malad.The ruse could be anything and everything, right from Income Tax officials checking for gold worn by people on the road, to a police dragnet being put up ahead for all those wearing jewellery.

In some cases of this old Mumbai crime, victims have also said that they wouldn’t have fallen for the ruse, but they felt hypnotised and weak when the con men spoke to them.This con is one of the main reasons why individuals should be careful while walking on the streets, even in areas that they are familiar with.

This is one of those rare cons that one can carry out in broad daylight, and the modus operandi is comparatively easy.There’s another scam that conmen carry out in broad daylight. That scam had the criminals put up a small vending cart in busy areas, claiming they were selling mobile phones for cheap.

The victim buying the phone would be told to open the package of the phone once they had gone away from the crowd. The victim would do so, only to find out that the package of the mobile phone is empty.
