Heists don’t make crime news headlines, but when they do, they make for essential reading, and the articles, more often than not, have an unfortunate ending for the perpetrators. That’s precisely what happened to six robbers in the Ara district of Bihar, who carried out a heist in a jewellery shop, attempting to make off with more than ₹25 crore worth of valuables, according to this Indian Express article.
The way the crime was carried out suggests that the criminals spent some time casing the joint and planning the crime. They knew that the shop had a policy of not allowing too many people at one go, and therefore came in couples, and as soon as the sixth man was in, guns were brandished, and the sales staff was escorted into a corner.
The Ara heist is one of the boldest moves by criminals in recent times, but also perplexing because the perpetrators fled on three motorcycles, which also led to a high-speed chase by the police. This, in turn, led to two of the perpetrators being shot and arrested.
Two of the criminals were arrested, and cash and two bags of jewellery were confiscated from them. This would also mean that a significant chunk of the stolen goods has already been retrieved, making all of this the proverbial errand that nobody thought through well.
On the face of it, the crime run has more or less ended, with two people in custody; it is only a matter of time before the police trace the others. Interestingly, individuals who had the audacity to carry out a heist worth more than ₹25 crore relied on their driving skills to escape the clutches of law enforcement.
Every heist movie tells us that successfully escaping from the heist is as essential as carrying out the heist itself, but that memo probably hasn’t reached every state of the country yet.
