It’s not just a good idea to do the background check and register a housemaid with the local police; it’s mandatory. This FIR at the Bhandup police station of Mumbai crime states exactly why. According to a woman in Bhandup, a maid they hired just ten days ago has absconded, after a 5 g gold ring, worth nearly ₹35K, has disappeared.
According to the woman, she owned three rings, which she kept in a box in the cupboard. She took the box out to use one of the rings for a marriage ritual and kept the remaining two in a box in the kitchen cabinet, where the housemaid, who was hired just seven days ago, was doing her chores.
Upon returning, the woman saw that one of the rings was missing. She confronted the housemaid and asked her family members about it. The housemaid feigned innocence. However, the next day, the housemaid didn’t turn up for work, increasing suspicion that she had stolen the ring. The woman has now filed a case.
It remains to be seen why the housemaid, who was working in other houses, has absconded. If he has committed the crime, why would she commit such a straightforward crime, which is typically termed an ‘open and shut case’?
When it comes to a Mumbai crime, house help committing theft and robbery is becoming increasingly common, so authorities have made it mandatory for employers to register their prospective house help with the local police station.
