Online scams are becoming bolder, and the amounts involved are increasing like there’s no tomorrow. A recent FIR of a Mumbai crime shows that a senior citizen was forced to transfer almost ₹1 Cr from her account to the scamster’s account—and all in a matter of four days.
Unfortunately, this Mumbai crime has the same modus operandi that this site and several others have been trying to raise awareness about. But the number of cyber crimes being reported proves that there’s a lot more ground to cover.
In this case, a senior citizen first received a call on her number from the scamster, informing her that one of her parcels had been caught. The parcel contained credit cards, which were used for money laundering. The scamster further told the victim that a Supreme Court arrest warrant had been registered in her name. Within a week, the woman transferred almost a crore to the various bank accounts that she was provided with.
Once again, the role of banks comes into question. The woman has listed three major banks in which she held accounts. It is surprising that though she had such significant deposits in these banks, none of the bank officials bothered to confirm with the senior citizen when she was transferring such tremendous amounts to a bank account she probably never had anything to do with before these instances.
While one of the accounts she transferred money from was a Co-operative bank account, two are full-fledged banks. Ironically, one of the banks ran full-fledged ads warning individuals of online scams. In such a scenario, it is downright bizarre that no bank official bothered to raise a query about the transactions.
Covers the crime beat, spreading awareness about crimes, scams and everything dastardly.
