Mumbai police had their hands full on June 13, 2025, with a unique Mumbai crime – eerily similar cases of drunken stupor disrupted the peace in Bandra and Vile Parle, both involving young men under the heavy influence of alcohol behaving erratically in public spaces.
Two Mumbai Crimes – One Reason
The first incident unfolded around 5:00 PM at the Bandstand promenade in Bandra West, a popular hangout spot for locals and tourists alike. A 24-year-old security guard, reportedly intoxicated, was spotted creating a ruckus, shouting and disturbing passersby. Despite being warned by a police constable on patrol, the man refused to quiet down. He was eventually taken into custody and brought to the police station, where he continued to misbehave. Medical tests confirmed alcohol consumption, and the police booked him under Section 85(1) of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act, 1949, which penalises disruptive public conduct under the influence of liquor.
Just hours later, a second case cropped up at Joggers Park, Chhabildas Road in Vile Parle West, where another young man, also intoxicated, began shouting and creating a nuisance around 5:15 PM. He, too, was warned by officers on beat duty, including members of the Maharashtra Security Force, but failed to comply. His belligerent behaviour led to his arrest. Even after being brought to the local police station, the individual reportedly continued to act out. He was similarly charged under Section 85(1) of the same act.
Both cases, reported from high-visibility public zones with heavy foot traffic, have raised concerns among citizens and law enforcement alike. Police officials confirmed that these were not isolated incidents and pointed to an increasing number of alcohol-related public disturbances in key Mumbai neighbourhoods.
In both cases, swift police intervention prevented further escalation. No injuries or property damage were reported, but both incidents are being treated seriously,y given the public safety implications.
The Mumbai Police have reiterated their call for citizens to exercise responsibility in public places, especially when under the influence. Patrols have also been tightened across popular evening zones such as Bandra Bandstand and Joggers Park to deter such behaviour in the future.
