Man Duped Of 65 Lakh On Matrimonial Site

A divorcee who made his profile on a matrimonial website came in contact with a scamster in a new Mumbai crime. The person had him transfer more than ₹60 Lakh in various tranches in what can only be termed the ‘Gold Mining Scam. ‘

According to the FIR filed, the man came in contact with the woman on the matrimonial website, and the person introduced him to a gold mining process, which the person said could get him good returns. Convinced, the man made an account on the website provided and started transferring money into the account. Soon, the man had transferred more than ₹63 Lakh, and when he wanted to withdraw ₹20 Lakh, he was told that he would first need to pay handling charges.

Unfortunately, the above incident is not a one-off, and such crimes happen almost daily. Of course, there are several red flags in this entire incident. A reading of the FIR reveals that the mean has transferred significant amounts.

There are single transactions ranging up to 20 Lakh, with the lowest amount mentioned being ₹50,000. Did such significant transactions not raise an alarm in the banking system? The transactions were carried out through 2024 and 2025; with so many transactions and such high amounts, it is surprising that the bank didn’t query.

This also raises questions about the role of the matrimonial site on which the two met. Were all security aspects in place on the website, and was the account never flagged by the website’s admins?

It is absolutely high time that organisations like banks and matrimonial websites wake up to the spate of cyber crime and their unfortunate role in it. Otherwise, more and more people will start losing money with absolutely no respite.
