In a harrowing Mumbai crime, a husband-and-wife duo had the worst social media experience. This was one that even their families and extended families experienced. The man first got a call from an unknown number threatening him with dire consequences if he did not leave his wife. He confronted his wife about the call. She accepted that she knew the caller and had spoken to his family about it.
Things got worse as time passed. The husband chose not to take the man’s calls. He started getting calls from unknown numbers, which he avoided. It was then that his family members told him about his wedding photos and intimate photos of his wife leaked on Instagram groups.
The FIR states that the man knew the victim’s wife. However, it does not specify whether the man and the woman were in an intimate relationship prior to the woman’s wedding. It is also unclear whether the intimate photos were genuine images.
A case has now been filed under the stringent Section 67 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. This section deals with the publication, transmission, or causing transmission of obscene material in electronic form. It criminalises the publishing or sharing of content online (or via any electronic means) that is considered such, such as sexually explicit material. The section carries a sentence of up to 3 years and a fine.
A person who is convicted again can be imprisoned for up to 5 years and fined more. The unfortunate aspect of such crimes is that most people do not understand the seriousness of their actions. When reality comes crashing down, they are, for the most part, not ready for it.
This is one of the few crimes that one cannot be wary of. However, as soon as someone falls into such a trap, they should immediately contact the authorities and begin damage control. In this case, the exact relationship between the accused and the victim’s wife remains to be seen.
