Things took an unusual turn in this Mumbai crime, which saw a man attempt suicide and succumb to his injuries after a woman he met online alleged that she was pregnant with their child.
The man’s brother has now filed a complaint, and the investigation is ongoing. According to this report, the two hadn’t even met offline, but the deceased panicked, even though his family had vouched for their support for him. The deceased allegedly slit his throat in Jogeshwari, and was immediately shifted to a hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.
At the very outset, this seems like a cyber-bullying, cyber-blackmail scam gone wrong, which ended with the death of an innocent individual. Such scams are common, and the modus operandi is simple.
A person first befriends someone else online and then tries to hoodwink money from the person in some way or another. What is perplexing is that while the complaint maintains that the two hadn’t even met each other offline, the kind of pressure that the man went through allegedly led to his suicide.
Cyber blackmail and cyberbullying are on the rise, and as this case proves, individuals of all genders can fall prey to this Mumbai crime. Earlier, in Gurugram, a school-going girl was forced to siphon off money from her grandmother’s account to pay off a blackmailer who first befriended her online.
Cyber blackmail is one of the most harrowing crimes that a person can undergo, but always remember, help is always at hand. The number of people who have succumbed to this crime is devastating, and we can only hope that people gather the strength to ward off these individuals.
