Thief Tries To Trick Police, Foiled By Technology

An aspiring thief saw his dreams crashing down, all because of tech that has been around for decades in Mumbai – CCTVs. Even though every other public spot in the city is under CCTV surveillance, a person thought he could get away by lodging a false theft case.

This enterprising individual worked in a jewellery firm and alleged that he had bought gold worth ₹20 Lakh and was travelling from Panvel. But when he reached Sandhurst Road station, he felt unwell and slept on the seat, according to this Mid-Day report.

When he woke up, he was at Masjid Bunder, and the jewellery was missing. The complaint prompted the CGRP to launch a manhunt, but CCTV footage did not yield any leads. The police then interrogated the complainant, and he confessed to stealing the jewellery.

In a twist, the man felt guilty and returned the gold to its rightful owner. However, this still means that the man could be booked for filing a false case, and whether that will happen remains to be seen.

This is a unique Mumbai crime, and it is worth noting that young people often engage in such behaviour when they are stressed. They walk away from their home or workplace when under stress, and when it is time to return home, they are worried about the consequences and cook up a story of kidnapping.

Several youngsters even ask their parents for ransom. This time, it didn’t escalate so much; there is a good chance that the complainant might see some jail time or even a fine.
