Prospective Car Buyer Duped By Fake OLX Car Seller

Go to any online e-commerce website, and you will see notices warning you to be careful when dealing with individuals, either while buying or selling products. However, a man was still duped by a fake seller of a vehicle to the tune of ₹5,60,000 in a Mumbai crime. The modus operandi was simple. The accused set up an ad that he was selling a car on OLX.

The victim contacted the accused, and a meeting was set in the Shrivastav Complex area of Mira Road. The accused said that he lived in the Shrivastav Complex. The victim saw the car, liked it, and struck a deal.

The final payment was supposed to be made once the registration was complete. Later. The accused expedited the process of taking the final payment. The accused called the victim to deliver the vehicle.

However, once they reached the area, the accused had switched off his phone, and there was no trace of the car. When the victim asked nearby individuals, they found out that the man who had called them never lived in the area.

What stands out in this crime is the audacity of the accused, calling the victim and prospective buyer to a location to show the vehicle. Such scamsters usually try to get as much money from their victims as possible online without meeting their victims.

Also, OLX has several notifications informing and warning prospective buyers and sellers with tips on how to have a safe and profitable buying and selling experience. However, it is unfortunate that the victim started transferring money to the accused in tranches without completing the paperwork.
