Senior Citizen Loses INR 16 Lakh After Calls To Her Phone Forwarded

In a case of cyber Mumbai crime, a senior citizen from Thane has registerd a complaint that she has lost close to INR 13 Lakh through illegal online transactions on her debit cards, after she tried to contact the BMC for pest control in her building.

According to the FIR filed, the crime occured in 2024. The woman found the purported number to contact the BMC online. On contact, a woman over the line said that she would need to pay INR 50 to register the pest control.

When the victim said that such services were free, another person took the call and spoke to her. After the conversation, the woman got a message on her phone that INR 1,00,000 had been transferred from her account

When she confronted the man over the phone, she again got a message that another amount had been deducted from her account. The next day, the woman checked all her bank account, but no money was deducted from three of her bank accounts.

Further, the woman claims that she stopped the net-banking feature on several of her bank accounts. However, the woman didn’t check one particular account, and was shocked to find that INR 13 Lakh were fraudulently debited from that particular account.

On further investigation, the lady found that all calls to her phone had been transferred to another number. It is unclear how that could be done without the explicit consent of the actual owner of the number.

What’s more interesting is that the criminals directly did a call transfer, so details of all her bank accounts were accessible, and not just one particular one.
