In a unique crime that can be dubbed as the ‘medical insurance coverage fraud’, an NRI professor of biotechnology lost more than INR 10 Lakh to an intricate medical insurance fraud. The timeline of the crime began when the professor got a call from an unknown person, asking whether her father was approved for medical insurance in India.
When she conversed further, the man convinced her to download an app and put her details in the downloaded app. While she couldn’t download the app on her mobile, the woman decided to download the app on her father’s phone.
As the conversation moved forward, the caller convinced the woman to transfer around INR 6 Lakh in three tranches, saying that the amount would be refunded. The victim did that and even got part of the money back. However, when she checked her father’s mobile, she found out that around INR 10 Lakh had been fraudulently transferred from his account.
This is a unique incident in which the scammer actually refunded a significant part of the amount that the woman had transferred from one particular bank account. However, the amount that the scammer could take from the other account was considerably higher.
Another unique factor about this Mumbai crime is the concept of medical insurance. While there have been previous instances of medical insurance being used for fraud, this is a unique case where medical insurance coverage and the advance fee fraud have been coupled. In this case, the fraudster seems to have simply siphoned off the private details from the victim’s phone.
There have been cases of people duped under the guise of insurance policies in the past, but the modus operandi was a bit different. In those cases, the scammer would contact the victim, promising them a personal loan if they took an insurance policy. In many cases, the scammers would either scam the victim right off the bat by making them transfer the amount to their personal account or continue taking money from them under various guises.
